What s the defination of pop star?

I can see many talented singers in american idol the x factor and so on. But They just seemed to be cheered by audience under stage not the complex records market. How?are they not popular enough?otherwise how can they stand on that tv stage?or they lack some really hit songs?i can also see except dj jazz like noral jones got success well confused………
