Who first used the word 'smithereens'?

I'm getting very frustrated whilst searching for the etymology of this word. It apparently was first spelled 'smiddereens' when it appeared in 1829 and comes from an Irish Gaelic word (which I forget how to spell). What is annoying me, is that all these websites confidently announce that the word was first used (coined?) in 1829. If that be the case and it can be traced to such a specific date, then why can't they say WHO used it and WHERE?
