I have a cement slab home with carpeting?

and have a family member who is newly allergic to dust mites. Someone suggested that I remove the carpeting and, instead of putting down wood flooring, prep and stain the cement floor. Is anyone familiar with this? Can you direct me to some do-it-yourself sites showing how to do this properly?
